As a Cornwall Wedding Photographer, I find myself drawn to the coastline for engagement and proposal photoshoots as it gives you the perfect backdrop for photography. Theres so much variety around Newquay; from the rugged coastline at the National Trusts famous Bedruthen Steps, to the quaint little beaches like Polly Joke that are hidden away from the more popular beaches like Fistral, theres somewhere for everyone to enjoy.
For Jess and Lewis, I suggested Little Fistral as it has a little bit of everything around it; with the sea, the rocks, the cliffs surrounding it and it's also overlooked by the old lifeboat house which is beautiful. Its one of those hidden corners of Newquay that feels tucked away from people as its away from all the shops so its purely for people who enjoy nature and the outdoors. Its also home to the Cornwalls big wave, the Cribbar which I've been lucky enough to watch surfers tackle over the winter and occasionally capture too.
They both got stuck in and put their trust in me, and by the end of the shoot it didn't really feel like work at all.
I met up with Jess and Lewis early that morning, along with their two children, timing it to avoid the usual beach crowds. Like most couples, having a bit of space makes it far easier to relax and be close without feeling watched. We spent the session simply wandering the beach, letting things unfold naturally. It’s the same laid-back approach I bring to all my Cornwall engagement shoots and weddings; nothing forced, just real moments as they happened.
What stood out most was how instinctively they turned to each other for reassurance. Those small glances quickly turned into laughter, and then into genuine smiles; exactly the kind of moments you can’t stage, but always make the best images.
I had one of those moments where i thought to myself 'this is it' and i knew I made the right choice moving to cornwall.
I still can't quite believe that Cornwall is my new playground and I get to share that with all my couples that book in engagement shoots. We are exploring the county together and making memories and I love that I can do that with them.
Engagement Shoots are completely different to weddings too. The stress is lower, theres no timelines, sit down meals or guests waiting, its just yourselves and the photographer and thats why I love shooting them as much as possible. It gives you time to breathe and get to know each other before the day itself.
As a photographer, my job is to guide my couples to get the best photos possible, without making it feel like a studio shoot with complete direction, and I strive on learning how couples work together and comfort each other. I then use this to their benefit to make sure they are having the best time possible without feeling pushed in to a style they didn't choose me for.
